Albany, NY (January 05, 2009) – The Boilermakers Northeastern Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 197, will conduct recruitment from January 6 through December 1, 2009 for 15 apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today. Applications will be available at the local, 890 Third St., Albany, from 9 a.m. to noon, the first Tuesday of each month, excluding holidays, during the recruitment period.
The committee requires that applicants:
* Be at least 18 years old – proof of age required when a bona fide offer of employment is presented or at the time of indenture.
* Have a high school or general equivalency diploma – proof required when a bona fide offer of employment is presented or at the time of indenture.
* Be physically able to do the work as determined by a verbal declaration and take an alcohol and drug test within 48 hours of signing an apprenticeship agreement.
* Have reliable transportation to remote work sites and apprentice instructions.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
